Perimeter fencing and blockwork on sloping ground, New Karu

A blockwork boundary wall following a falling boundary, with reinforced columns, courses laid to line and the drainage edge formed in the same works. Filmed on site in October 2026.

The job

A boundary wall that has to hold on sloping ground

This is external works on an estate plot in New Karu: a blockwork boundary wall following a boundary that falls across its length, with reinforced columns at intervals and the drainage edge formed as part of the same visit rather than left for later.

Sloping ground is where boundary walls fail. Water runs along the wall instead of away from it, undermines the foundation at the low end, and a wall built without movement joints and proper columns cracks within a season. The wall on this job is stepped and columned, with blockwork laid to line and level and the courses kept true across the fall.

Photographs and the clip below were taken by our site team in October 2026, while the work was in progress. Nothing here is a stock image.

The work in sequence

A short clip from the site, then stills across the job. Phones are held sideways; we have not cropped the work out to make it look tidier than it is.

Blocks laid to a line, with the plinth and setting-out visible. Blockwork is only as good as the line it follows.

Hollow blocks in course, grouted and levelled. The open water beyond the boundary is exactly why the wall has to sit on a proper foundation.

What this job shows about how we work

  • The wall was set out and levelled before blockwork started, so the top of wall is consistent across falling ground
  • Reinforced columns were cast at intervals rather than relying on blockwork alone
  • The drainage edge and kerb were formed as part of the external works, not added after a problem appeared
  • Blocks were laid to a line with the mortar and course height controlled, which is what limits cracking and gives a straight wall
  • The client's access along the boundary was kept open throughout, because a wall that blocks a neighbour's route becomes a dispute
Practical warning

Half-finished walls on sloping ground are vulnerable. If a boundary wall is going to stand unfinished through a rainy season, the top course should be protected and the low end drained. We build that into the programme rather than leaving it to luck.

Fencing a plot?

Send the boundary length, a photograph of the ground and whether you need a drain or kerb with it. We will visit and price it.
